Our impact in agricultural communities

We aim to generate at least $300 million in additional income for African farmers by 2030. It may seem high, but better harvests can deliver this. Our rock powders add nutrients to the soil that improve plant health and growth. This boosts crops yields — and farmers' income.

The impact of silicate rock powder on soil health is not the same everywhere.

In Kenya and sub-Saharan Africa, however, it can be transformational. Much of the soil is degraded, acidic, or both. This limits crop yields even in “good” years when rainfall and growing conditions are ideal. Chemical fertilisers are widely available but many farmers and agribusinesses cannot afford them, at least not to cover all their needs.

This is where Flux comes in. Our rock powders contain alkaline minerals that balance soil acidity. They also add nutrients to soil and help it retain water, which improves farming on degraded land. The powder is an agricultural fertilizer — and we give it to farmers for free.

Carbon finance pays for this through enhanced rock weathering-based carbon removal credits that we sell to companies. With average incomes lower in Kenya than in many parts of the world, this free input can make a difference for farmers who cannot afford chemical fertilizers — especially when fertilizer prices remain historically high.

The impact of free fertilizer on livelihoods is magnified when it increases harvests from degraded, poor soils. For smallholder farmers this can mean more food for a family and extra income for household essentials or school. For smaller agribusinesses it can raise profits and free up cash for more fertilizers that further improve yields.

By capturing and removing carbon dioxide, enhanced rock weathering undeniably helps to fight climate change. But its effects on plant growth are the more real and visible benefit in the agricultural communities where we operate.

There is no limit to the community benefits of improving agricultural conditions in sub-Saharan Africa. So we will gladly keep giving our rock powder to any farm that wants it.

We are working to achieve two impact goals by 2030.
